The dangers of fast fashion

Fast fashion, a way of mass-producing cheap clothing, plays a harmful role in our modern-day society. It causes a multitude of issues, including greenhouse gas emissions/carbon emissions, textile waste, and harmful working conditions. Studies show that around 10% of carbon emissions are caused by fast fashion. This type of clothing production uses a large amount of plastic and synthetic clothing material. These items are made with materials that are harmful to the environment as they take a long time to decompose. In the process of decomposition, they emit vast amounts of toxins into the ground and water. Fast fashion brands often have leftover clothing and materials and it causes harmful threats to the environment. A study shows that in Europe 4 million tons of fast fashion textiles are wasted every year. Not only does fast fashion play a negative role in nature, but it also plays a negative role in the employment industry. Workers in these factories are underpaid and overworked. For example, the popular fast fashion brand “Shein” is noted to have 18-hour shifts for its employees. If a worker makes a mistake on a clothing item, their daily wage is penalized by ⅔. Fast fashion is damaging our society and we need to put an end to it. That’s why we should donate our clothes, upcycle (reuse materials from clothing), spread awareness, and buy from sustainable brands so we don't harm our planet anymore.
